This year the Ontario Ski Team is comprised of the top 16 athletes from across Ontario. They are a pretty swell gang- but don’t take MY word for it…

Ashley Huet [Highlands Nordic, Duntroon]
Moira Haggerty [Lakehead University, Big Thunder]
Hi! I’m a nursing student at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, where I ski with Big Thunder and the Thunderwolves Varsity Ski Team. My best result from last season was placing 4th in the CCUNC team relay at Nationals on the Plaines D’Abraham (especially cool because my sister was my partner). One of my favourite workouts recently was a fun workout adventure where we explored the Shuniah Mines trails, without a map… or a time limit! We ran the single-track paths by foot until we’d found our way back… two hours later 😉 . My goal is to be FAST, to proudly represent my team, and to be a role model for others!
Cam Raynor [SOTC, Hardwood]
My name is Cam Raynor and I ski for arrowhead nordic ski club in Huntsville. I’m also a member I’d the southern Ontario training centre where I’ve been given the awesome opportunity to train full time with a great group of guys. I’m 19 and have been skiing since I could walk. My favorite workout is 2-4 minute intervals. I just love to ski fast. In my free time I enjoy paying my violin and work on my Athabasca university courses. This year I’m working on keeping a forward body position when I ski and developing more upper body and double polling power. My goal this year is to be accepted to a national development centre.
Ben Wilkinson-Zan [Nakkertok]
Basia Gunka [Big Thunder, Thunder Bay]
My name is Barbara Gunka, and I ski for Big Thunder in my hometown of Thunder Bay. This upcoming season will be my first year as a junior woman. My favourite workout of the season is doing bounding intensity. The team sprint at Nationals is my best result to date, and one of my most fun races, with a great partner, Mia Serratore. My goal for the upcoming season is to keep doing questionable things, and working on my psychological strength.
Shelby Dickey [Highlands Nordic]
Hey! My name is Shelby Dickey and I am 18 years old. My best 2011/2012 result was a 10th and 11th at the Sovereign Lake NORAM and several silver and bronze Ocup medals. I don’t really have an all-time favorite workout. Pretty much I love anything challenging and epic. I am currently working on my mental training (visualization, pre-race focus etc.) and on perfecting my pre-race routine. Stoked for the upcoming season!
Colin Foley [Nakkertok]
My name is Colin. I began skiing with Nakkertok at the age of seven. My first medal was from the Nakkertok Cookie Race. I played hockey until the age of fourteen but I have made the decision to pursue skiing and make it my main focus. Skiing is the best.
Jenn Jackson [Hardwood]
Best 2011/2012 Result: fifth place in sprints at WJT and fifth at Nationals
Favorite Workout: probably 3x10minute zone3 intensity or any LSD workouts… ultimate frisbee is pretty sweet too
Things I am working on: The big thing for me is getting into the right racing mindset and maintaining focus throughout the race. In terms of technique, I think I need to improve my one skate the most. Key points for that are engaging my core and upper body more and keeping good ankle flexion.
Other: I enjoy long skis on the beach, writing poetic comments for iLog, and epic post workout meals, among other things.
Jess Demers [Porquipine Ski Racers, Timmins]
My name is Jess Demers, I ski for Porcupine Ski Runners (Timmins, we are a really small race team, we’re only 2 athletes). My best result in 20122/2012 was at the Ontario-Cup #1 in Thunder-Bay, I had an amazing prologue 3km classic and a really good 5km mass start. My favorite workout was when we were a realy big gang on road bikes here in Timmins and we did a 20km time trial, it was really fun and nice out! This year I really need to work on my skate skiing technique overall. I am appairently an “old style” skier so i will try to fix that. I do many other sports as weel, I do cross-country running, track & field, dirtbiking, kayaking, mountain biking, road biking… I get very competitive when it comes to sports, certainly fun games!
Isabelle MacLean [Walden, Sudbury]
My name is Isabelle MacLean. I am seventeen years old and ski for the Walden Cross-Country Fitness club. This is my first year on the Ontario Ski Team as well as the Ontario Development Ski Team. It was right at the end of the ski season last year that I achieved my best result with an 11th place finish in the skate sprints at nationals. It’s safe to say that I was incredibly pumped to have qualified past the quarterfinal round at the national level! My favorite workouts are long Z1 distance skis and Z4 intervals on skis. I love being out on the snow on those bright sunny days and feeling the exhaustion after a particularly difficult workout. One thing that I am working on this year is improving my diagonal and one-skate techniques.
Sadie White [Big Thunder]
My name is Sadie White. I live in Thunder Bay, and I ski with Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club. II have been skiing since I was about four years old, which is practically my whole life. This is my first time on the Ontario Ski team. I LOVE cross country skiing, there are so many things that I love about it. For example, it is awesome to meet so many new people across the country, and maybe hopefully someday across the world. I have a great group of friends that I ski with who I have tons of fun with. I love traveling around for ski races, it is just so much fun, and I love the new experiences that I get to encounter. Another thing I love about skiing is the racing, I love how I feel before a race; excited but nervous, and ready to rock and roll! And after a race, I feel on op of the world. I love learning new things, I have been working a lot on my classic technique, which I must say is definitely improving. f I am not skiing I am “chillin with my homies”. And one day I aspire to travel all over the world. All in all, I love pretty much everything about skiing, and it makes my life so much better, and much more enjoyable!!!!!!!!!!
Madi Fraser [North Bay Nordic]
My name is Madison Fraser, and I am 16 years old, which means that I’ll be skiing as a second year Junior Girl this year. Being a second year Junior Girl makes our distances a little bit longer (something I’m super excited about!). I’ve been skiing with the North Bay Nordic Junior Racing Team since I was 11 years old, and before that I was in Jackrabbits. This is my second year on the Ontario Ski Team, and every minute has been a blast. My proudest result last year was a 7th place finish in the sprints at Nationals. My favourite type of workout is probably core or strength, especially circuits! In training so far this year I’ve been working a lot on skiing forward, and on the balls of my feet, as well as improving my double pole. Looking forward to the upcoming race season!
Mia Serratore [Big Thunder]
Julian Smith [GBN, Owen Sound]
Hello there world! My name is Julian Thomas Tones Smith and I am an avid cross-country ski racer on the Ontario Ski Team. Three key races from last season placed me in the top spot in the juvenile boys O-cup circuit: 3rd at Easterns, 7.5km SK interval, 1st in Timmins, 7.5km CL mass and 1st in Duntroon, 5km CL interval. I am 16 years of age and my current location of inhabitance is Oxenden, ON. I ski for Georgian Bay Nordic, which is located at the base of the Bruce Peninsula. I do a lot of my training on amazing roads looking out over Colpoys Bay. It is a wonderful place to train. I pound in the kilometers running, biking and skiing on these roads but my favorite workouts consist of classic sprint simulation intervals and long zone 3 skate intervals. I like them because of the contrast of pushing myself to the limit in the sprints and of working on efficiency and flow in the zone 3 workouts. Many skiers know the phrase “Get those hips higher!” all too well. This season I have been working adamantly on my classic striding technique. Now all I have to wait for is for the snow to FLY!
Brendon Howard [Nakkertok, Ottawa]
Hey, my name is Brendon Howard and I am 16 years old. I started skiing with Nakkertok the summer before the 2011-2012 season, but I have been skiing since I was 4. For me, my best results are probably when I medalled in all three races at the O-Cup in Timmins, including first in one of the races. Although I enjoy doing a lot of workouts, my favourite one would have to be Z4 rollerski combo workouts where you switch from skate to classic or the other way around halfway through the interval. I like this workout because it makes the interval more interesting and fun. This past season, I have been working quite a bit on technique, especially classic. I am really looking forward to this season and I can already tell it’ll be awesome!
Aaron Birosh [North Bay Nordic, North Bay]
I am Aaron Birosh. I am 16 years old and this is my first year on the Ontario Ski Team. I ski with the North Bay Nordic Junior Race Team and I have been skiing for 10 years. My biggest accomplishment was earning a 3rd place finish at the Eastern Canadian Championships in 2012. My favourite workout is a core session and storytime with Pav. I am working on improving my two skate technique and relaxing in both techniques.
